Is it safe to delete icc profiles from Folder
Mar 15, 2013
I have a number of icc profiles which I have never user or probably never will eg Adobe RGB 1998; EuroscaleCoated; Japan Colour2001Coated,is it safe to delete them, or as they are not doing any harm should I leave them in the folder.....its just me wanting to tidy things up so that when I look for the profile to print it is easier to find.
thanks
Dave

It won't hurt anything to delete the profiles, as long as you're sure you'll never need them. Personally, I'd keep the Adobe RGB profile as that's a commonly used color space profile. However, the CMYK profiles are safe to delete, as few people outside of professional printers, have need for CMYK profiles.

Ok, thanks Bob, will keep the RGB one but how do I tell the difference between the CMYK ones please.
Thanks again

Personally, I don't think it is worth the effort. They don't take much space and the next time you upgrade Photoshop or Lightroom, they will be back there again.
If you find the sheer number of them gets in the way, then unistall them through your operating system.

I've dealt with profiles long enough that I can usually tell from the names which are CMYK profiles, but I can see how it would be confusing to you. Unfortunately, I don't know of any good way of distinguishing just by looking at the profiles. Here are the ones I would suggest you keep, plus any monitor or printer profiles for your own devices:
AdobeRGB1988, ProPhotoRGB (if present), sRGB Color Space Profile
The other thing you could do with the profiles you want to remove, is to move them to a different folder. That way, you would have them (if ever needed), yet have fewer profiles to choose from.

In my profiles folder there are 91 profiles taking 33Mbyte, which is 0.026% of my 128G SSD drive C. I get pretty fussy about unnecessary bloat files on my C drive, but I can't say I'm losing sleep over 0.026%.
In fact, I see that more than half of the 33Mbyte is taken up with printer profiles installed with my printer's drivers. The 30 or so that I'm really never ever going to use take up around 12Mbyte, or 0.009% of my (fairly small) C drive.

The OP wrote: ".....its just me wanting to tidy things up so that when I look for the profile to print it is easier to find." It was a good question.
