Polo: Official trailer
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's latest Netflix project is due to hit screens - and its eagerly awaited trailer has dropped.
The new series, which will premiere on Netflix next month, goes behind the high-stakes world of polo and promises to show the "grit behind the glamour". The five-part series will debut globally on December 10 and follows elite global players on and off the field as they compete in the US Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida.
Although Harry and Meghan are named as executive producers of the series, they do not appear to feature in the documentary. However, a trailer for the series titled Polo has been released giving a behind-the-scenes look at the "fast-paced and glamorous world of polo".
The trailer sees clips of elite players speaking to the camera about their experiences with the sport, including Nacho Figueras - a close friend of the Duke of Sussex - who described the high stakes of the game, saying: "Imagine going on a horse at 35mph with someone coming at you at full speed."
Other polo players seen in the trailer include Louis Devaleix who says "the adrenaline that goes through your body," when playing the sport is "addicting". He appeared alongside Timmy Dutta, Keko Magrini, and father and son players Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso - who are set to go head to head playing against each other on the polo field.
However, it seems that it won't just be life on the field that is explored in the documentary, with Nacho saying: "Polo is not just a sport, polo is a lifestyle. We eat, we breathe, we sleep polo." A female voice is also heard saying that the world of polo is "glamorous" adding that "it's a sexy sport too, dirty, sweaty boys riding".
And now several of Harry's former polo-playing pals have given their verdict on the series based on the trailer - and have branded it 'tacky' saying it left them in hysterics. One told the Daily Beast: "It's hilarious, but not in a good way. It's so tacky and cringey, it is literally all the worst things about polo. I watched it in appalled hysterics."
Meanwhile, another claimed that the trailer has missed an opportunity with its portrayal of the sport. They said: "The irony is that polo is actually a surprisingly inclusive sport these days. You do see plenty of rich kids but there are also plenty of kids from less rarefied backgrounds who just happen to be fantastic riders who are sponsored by the teams."
After the trailer dropped, Harry said in a statement: "This series offers audiences an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look into the passion and determination driving some of the world's elite polo players, revealing the grit behind the glamour. We're proud to showcase the true depth and spirit of the sport — and the intensity of its high-stakes moments."
The show has been produced by the Sussexes' company Archewell Productions, having previously released three documentaries with Netflix as part of a multimillion-pound deal with the streaming giant. Heart Of Invictus, which aired last August, followed a group of service members on their road to the Invictus Games, the Paralympic-style sporting competition set up by Harry in 2014 for injured and sick military personnel and veterans.
Netflix also released the documentary series Live To Lead and the controversial six-part Harry & Meghan documentary in December 2022. Harry and Meghan moved to the US in 2020 after stepping down from royal duties.
