Cursive fonts come in many forms, from rough, scratchy scrawls to elegant, flowing text and neat and concise scripts. Whether you're prioritising legibility or style, there's probably a free script font out there that can provide the right personality for your design.

There are so many font libraries out there – as well as individual designers who offer their own script fonts – that it can be hard to know where to start looking. So we've rounded up our favourite free script fonts all in one place to help you find what you need. All of the fonts listed below were free at least for personal use at the time of publications. A new entry in our list of the best free script fronts is Khaiun's Auro Rumpthut. It's a elegant but energetic modern calligraphy font that looks contemporary and sophisticated. The sample image on Behance show it in use on clothing and bags (see the main image above) as well as on cards and invitation, and it certainly looks the part for all of those uses. While it's not exactly the most legible of script fonts, it has a lovely flow to the characters. Auro Rumpthut includes full set of uppercase and lowercase letters plus numerals and a decent variety of punctuation and ligatures. The lowercase letters have beginning and ending swashes to create a realistic-looking hand-lettered style. Best of all, it's free for both personal and commercial use.

A script font created with a brushstroke, Clattering has a loverly dynamic movement and fluidity. Confident, with a carefree but slightly hurried energy, it's surprisingly versatile for use in different contexts. Against a beach-orientated background it can create a surfer-chic look, but in a black and white composition with a classic image, it can pull off a much more elegant look.
