LE SPOKANE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Sp District No. 81 It It It It It Chiefs battle in tight loss FERNIE, B. C. Spokane's second outing in the Western International Hockey League was a losing effort but, as much as it is possible in defeat, the Chiefs could look at the pluses.
Elk Valley won the battle 4-3 Sunday, but the Chiefs came back from a 3-0 deficit to make a game of it. Coupled with their opening victory Saturday a 10-2 crusher Kimberley in Kimberley the first weekend has to be regarded as a success. Spokane, which has returned to the WIHL after two years' absence, will be on the road for its next two games playing in Trail Friday and Nelson Saturday. The Chiefs do not have their home opener until Oct. 16 when Elk Valley visits for a 7:30 game.
Elk Valley lost its opener 5-1 to Nelson Saturday night, while Trail beat Cranbrook 5-3. Cranbrook is the defending Allan Cup champion and had won its home opener Friday, edging Kimberley 6-5 in overtime. The winning goal for the Elk Valley Blazers was off the stick of former Spokane player Ron Huston, the team's playing coach. He connected with 2:47 gone in the third period, just 25 seconds after Buddy Bodman had cut the Blazers' lead to 3-2. Mike Stone brought the Chiefs to within one goal again at the 9:38 mark, but the Spokane team just couldn't catch up.
The first period was scoreless, then the Blazers hit at the 25-second mark of the second and built up a 3-0 margin midway through the session. Spokane got on the scoreboard when Peter Morris connected at 18:49 of the third. Gary Vaughn collected assists on two of the Spokane counters. stat sheet (Continued from page 15) EWU J.
